Thursday, December 17, 2009 — With snow and ice blanketing the streets of Millsberry, there's only one thing to do—embrace it! Over at Lake Sylvane, ice skating is in full swing. In fact, on a recent snow day when the kids had off from school, Pete Peterson was seen out on the ice for several hours! He said that he was just excited to offer help to the kids...and there were lots of kids to help!

Luckily, Pete shared his top skating tips. He explained, It's scary to get out on the ice for the first time, but everyone should try because it's so much fun. First and foremost, remember that it's alright to fall because we all do. Just get right back up and keep moving. Stand as tall as you can, hold your head up high, and try not to look down at your feet. Instead, look straight ahead in the direction you're going. To stay balanced, hold your arms out in front of you (like you would if you were giving someone hug) and remember to bend your knees! Once you get the hang of it you'll never want to stop."

Now when you go to Lake Sylvane you'll automatically get a snowball tossed into your stuff! Keep coming back for more, or go to the Post Office to toss one to your friend! You can collect and toss as many as you want. You'll find that the Post Office also has a new postcard available that reminds citizens to get into the snowy-spirit and play Slap Shot Shootout!

Another way to make the most of the winter weather is to earn some extra cash! That's right: Just grab a shovel and start ringing doorbells! Shoveling snow is not only a great way to earn money, it's also a good way to stay active. Edna Nelson told us that even she has met lots of great citizens this way. She explained, "When I was a young girl here in Millsberry, my friends and I met many new people—just by shoveling their driveways and sidewalks! One winter I was even able to buy myself a unicycle with all the money I'd earned. Today, I meet all the kids in town because they offer to shovel my snow. I make sure to put my stereo in the window so they can listen to hip-hop—my favorite kind of music—while they work! Afterwards, I always offer hot cocoa!"

Other popular snow activities that don't require any special skills include making snow angels and sledding. For the best sledding experience, Millsberry snowboarder champ, Kelly Kimbell, gave us her tips. She noted, "Make sure the hill is free of any obstacles and that you've waited a day for the snow to be less fluffy and compact. Freshly fallen snow will only slow you down. And remember to always be careful and bring an adult with you, and you'll have loads fun!"

About snow angels, Kelly continued, "Freshly fallen, fluffy snow works the best. Once you're all bundled up, just lie down and make like you're doing jumping jacks, moving your arms and legs up and down, and in and out. When you're done, stand up and you'll see you've made an imprint of an angel! Don't stay at it too long though...after all, you don't want to freeze!"

Talk about tips! We feel lucky to have gotten such good advice from two great, winter-loving athletes right here in town! As a matter of fact, we saw more winter fun on our way back to the office that afternoon. Nearing downtown, three snowballs flew by—right over our heads. When we turned around, we discovered a playful snowball fight, already in full swing! Though tempted to join in, we instead decided to head to the store...to buy new ice skates for the weekend!
